About Me

I was born on a warm tropical sunny day on January in Indonesia. In my family, I’m the oldest child out of four. As the oldest one, I was always given more responsibilities than the others. I thought to myself, “Why does it have to be me?” However, as I grew up, those experiences helped me to shape my character.

My name is Alvin Lasmana. Ever since I was a kid, I love to draw and create something new. To me, art has always been my get away place from my daily routines, where there are no boundaries or limitations. Even without a proper education in art, I tried to learn new skills and techniques by copying and analyzing artworks around me. With that passion, I always knew that I want to do art and make a living with it. At first, many of the people that I know said that it would be difficult for me to succeed in the future. But, knowing what I am capable of and my potentials, my parents supported me. They told me to pursue my dream.

Enjoy Life

Life to me means doing works that I love, so that I will never regret in the future. Life should be an enjoyable process of living. Even though I knew that I want to pursue art and design degree, I did not know what I should focus on. During my senior year I took Design Technology class and I loved it. I consulted with the instructor many times. He suggested me that I should looked at Commercial Design major. After some researches on Commercial Design, I was exposed to Advertising and Product Designs. I love them both, but in the end I chose Product Design major.

Start Living

In 2006, I started my first semester as an Industrial Design student in Academy of Art University, San Francisco. Initially I struggled and at one point I thought that I did not belong there. I was an average student and could not excel well in my foundation classes. It took me a while until I adapted and find my own style. Once I discovered my strength and continued developing it, I felt more comfortable with myself and improved so much.

During my senior year, I worked with Shook Design, a start up design firm. Since that company is quite small, I received the chance to accomplish a lot more than just one stage of design. I designed electronics to sporting goods, children’s toys to kitchen wares, electric scooters to private airplanes, and many more. At one point, I was reminded about advertising, the one that I did not do in the past.

In 2012 I quit my job and applied for a graduate degree in Advertising. I am hoping that through Advertising, I could enhance my visual communication skills and bridge Advertising and Industrial Design. As time is progressing very fast, I am trying to gain the most out my time here in this school.
